Ozegahara1

Today is the third day after my arrival here in Ozegahara, also known as Oze.

floral season

I had walked around Ozegahara and seen many flowers. They say that this is the floral season here.

bokka

I saw a few mountain porters, which are called bokka. They put some boxes and corrugated cartons full of drinks and foodstuffs on their backs and carried them across wooden causeway on foot. The boxes must have weighed many kilograms. This used to be a regular method of transporting goods and could be seen throughout Japan. But now, this only remains common in Ozegahara and Hakubadake, because of the development of transportation networks in other regions.

bell

There were bells to ring to avoid bears, and we rang them. Fortunately, I did not see any.

I heard that there were between 30 and 40 different kinds of dragonflies in Oze. I saw a few different types. Hacchotonbo, or “weeping love glass,” is the smallest one in Japan, and is about the size of a yen (approximately 2 cm). It was very small, but after the first one I was able to find lots of them after.

Hatomachi

Today was Saturday, so a lot of tourists came to this area and I was not able to take pictures at my leisurely pace. Nevertheless, it has been really fine weather for three days and I was able to enjoy Oze. I want to go again in another season.
